Amazon.com is fighting back with a lawsuit trying to strike down New York state’s new law forcing the online retailer to collect sales taxes on the state’s behalf.

The dispute, which is before a state court in Manhattan, is heading toward a constitutional showdown that will center on whether New York State is hindering interstate commerce by imposing on out-of-state companies, such as Amazon.com, the burden of serving as a tax collector for New York.

News: 800 Nellis maintenance airmen out of a job
Posted byQ on Friday, February 15 @ 09:19:08 CST (297 reads)
AF News
About 800 airmen at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., will have to move to other assignments. Late Wednesday, Nellis officials announced that the Air Force would turn over most of the 57th Wing’s back shop maintenance duties to private contractors. The work had been done by 793 enlisted airmen, 11 officers and 72 civilians.

Another 310 back shop maintenance positions deemed “military essential” will continue to be filled by airman, Nellis spokeswoman Capt. Jessica Martin said. Also, the change doesn’t affect crew chiefs and others who do most of their work on the flight line and maintainers assigned to the Thunderbirds.

News: Border Patrol Discovers San Diego Wire Trap

Pro-V writes
"SAN DIEGO -- The Border Patrol says it found a metal wire strung between two border fences in San Diego -- an apparent effort to inflict serious injury or even death to its agents.

An agent discovered the wire on the ground Saturday. It was strung about 150 feet between San Diego's two border fences, leading through a hole into Mexico. The agency said the wire would be about four feet high if someone pulled on it from the Mexican side -- high enough to strike an agent on all-terrain vehicle in the neck.

The discovery comes amid rising border violence in San Diego. The Border Patrol says agents are increasingly under attack from people on Mexican soil and has retaliated in some cases by firing tear gas."

News: Navy Intercepts Russian Bombers

Gripes, complaints, pet peaves, etc...
U.S. fighter planes intercepted two Russian bombers, including one that buzzed an American aircraft carrier in the western Pacific during the weekend, The Associated Press has learned.

A U.S. military official says that one Russian Tupolev 95 flew directly over the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz twice, at a low altitude of about 2,000 feet, while another bomber circled about 58 miles out. The official was speaking on condition of anonymity because the reports on the flights were classified as secret.

The Saturday incident, which never escalated beyond the flyover, comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Russia over U.S. plans for a missile defense system based in Poland and the Czech Republic.
